Fusion in Focus: Novatron Fusion Group Energizes Almedalen Agenda Following Historic Inauguration

At Almedalen Week 2025, Sweden’s premier political and innovation forum, Novatron Fusion Group (NFG) took centre stage in Sweden’s national conversation on energy, innovation, and industrial strategy, showcasing fusion energy not as a distant hope, but a near-term reality.

Against a backdrop of rising geopolitical uncertainty and urgent climate action, NFG’s panels and speaking engagements drew strong attention from policymakers, investors, and thought leaders eager to understand the role fusion can play in building a clean, sovereign, and scalable energy future for Sweden and the Nordics.

The interest at Almedalen came on the heels of a historic moment for Swedish science and industry: the inauguration of NFG’s NOVATRON 1, just two weeks earlier (read more here). As the only Nordic private initiative and EU’s first private, fully integrated fusion plasma system, NOVATRON 1 positions the Nordics at the forefront of a global race toward fossil-free baseload power. The event brought together key figures from government, academia, and industry - including nearly all members of the Swedish Parliament’s Energy Committee.

A political consensus emerged: fusion energy is a unifying issue. Representatives from across party lines expressed strong interest in the NOVATRON technology and its potential. There was a shared sense of optimism and ambition, with broad support for the idea that Sweden could—and should—emerge as a major export leader in the fusion field in the years to come. However, now it is time to go from words to action, and the Almedalen discussions created great momentum for that, not least by NFG hosting the first-ever panel on fusion energy.

Flagship Panel: Fusion Energy Around the Corner

NFG’s own seminar - “Fusion Energy Around the Corner – The New Green Nuclear Power Emerging in Sweden” - was held on Wednesday, June 25 at the Fenomenalen Science Centre in Visby. It drew a highly engaged and diverse audience from long-time fusion enthusiasts and policymakers to major energy stakeholders and international representatives, exploring the Nordics´ growing potential as a global fusion innovation hub.

Almedalen 2025 marked a milestone for fusion energy awareness in Sweden. There’s strong interest in how Sweden can take a leading role in a rapidly emerging global mega-industry—a gamechanger for clean, safe, and affordable energy. Many described it as a real eye-opener and expressed relief at seeing, for once, a truly positive development toward reducing society’s dependence on fossil fuels while meeting the future growing energy demand.

The panel featured a high-level lineup including:

  • Peter Roos, CEO of Novatron Fusion Group

  • Linus Lakso, MP & Energy Policy Spokesperson, Green Party

  • Henrikki Talvitie, CEO of St1

  • Craig Jantzen, Northern Europe Regional Manager in Science & Technology Network at the British Embassy in Stockholm

  • Patrik Hermansson, Head of Business Development at Uniper Sweden

Together, they examined the technical breakthroughs, regulatory shifts, and strategic investments positioning fusion as a key pillar in the energy transition. The discussion also emphasized how political alignment, industrial readiness, and research collaboration are now converging—creating conditions for Sweden to lead in commercial fusion.

Over three days, the NFG team actively participated in over 25 events, engaged with hundreds of participants directly and indirectly, reflecting the growing curiosity and support for fusion as a credible, near-term energy solution.

A key standout this year was a clear shift in public perception. We were frequently approached by attendees who were already familiar with NFG and our mission. Many had read about our progress or attended recent fusion related events, and several expressed genuine emotion about the realisation that fusion energy is no longer a distant dream - it’s happening now, here in the Nordics. The growing recognition of our work is a testament to the dedication of our team and partners. As we look ahead, this experience will shape how we deepen our role, not just as a technology leader, but as an educator and advocate for a fusion-powered future.
